Smooth texture and minimal residue after just 15-30 seconds of shaking
Reasonable price point at just 8 cents per gram of protein
Considerations
Contains artificial flavors and colors
Does not third-party test their formula
Our Verdict
If taste and mixability are your top priorities, you will probably like Black Magic’s whey protein. The Fruit Whirls and Horchata flavors are delicious, and they both mix incredibly well.
However, if you prefer all natural formulas and formulas that are third-party tested, you may want to keep looking. Black Magic whey protein does contain artificial flavors and colors and they do not offer third-party testing from a trusted source like NSF or Informed Choice.
Ultimately, the right protein powder for you depends on your individual needs and preferences. Black Magic offers good taste and mixability at a reasonable price, but its nutritional value and third-party testing scores are lower than other whey protein powders.

My Experience with Black Magic’s Multi-Source Protein:
Taste Test (8/10)
I tried two flavors: Fruit Whirls and Horchata. As a big cereal lover growing up, I was excited to taste the Fruit Whirls flavor, which contains real cereal bits. It brought back childhood memories and tasted great, earning a solid 8 out of 10.
The Horchata flavor, which I was also eager to try since I love the traditional Horchata taste, was solid as well. However, I did notice a slight artificial aftertaste, due to the artificial flavoring. Despite this, the Horchata flavor still earned a respectable 7.5 out of 10.
Mixing these flavors with milk or a milk alternative would likely improve the taste. Overall, while the Horchata flavor had a minor drawback, both Fruit Whirls and Horchata delivered a solid taste.
Taste testing the Horchata flavor
Digestibility (7/10)
It didn’t sit quite as comfortably in my stomach as some other protein powders I’ve used in the past. This might be due to the artificial flavors and colors in the formula, especially in the Fruit Whirls flavor which contains cereal bits. I tend to eat more natural ingredients, so my stomach is likely more sensitive to artificial additives.
That said, it was a subtle uneasiness, nothing overly severe. It’s worth noting that everyone’s digestive system is different, so your mileage may vary.
Something else to consider: Black Magic’s protein blend includes egg albumin, which is a slower-digesting protein compared to whey isolate. This slower digestion may contribute to a slightly heavier feeling in the stomach for some people.
Overall, I scored Black Magic’s digestibility 7 out of 10. It’s not the worst I’ve tried, but it wasn’t the easiest on my stomach. If you have a particularly sensitive digestive system or prefer to avoid artificial ingredients, keep this in mind.
As always, listen to your body and pay close attention to how you feel after trying a new supplement. What works well for one person may not work for everyone, so a little trial and error can go a long way in finding the right protein powder for your specific needs.

Protein density (7.5/10)
Black Magic’s multi-source protein has a protein density of 77% (note: I miscalculated this in the YouTube video review, forgive me!). You get 24 grams of protein per serving and 125 total calories. This is the average protein density of all protein powders we’ve reviewed to date.
This isn’t necessarily a good or bad thing. It just depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking to lose weight or stay lean and want to minimize your total caloric intake, there are better options out there. — Isopure, for example, which has a 100% density. But, if you’re looking to bulk up and want your protein shakes to double as a meal replacement, this is good news.
That said, protein density is just one part of the equation when choosing a protein. Factors like taste, mixability, digestibility, and overall nutritional profile all play a role in determining which product is the best fit for you.

Bang for your buck (7.5/10)
I scored Black Magic’s multi-source protein a 7.5 out of 10 in the cost category. At 8 cents per gram of protein, it falls within the standard price range compared to other protein powders on the market.
It’s not the most budget-friendly option out there, but it offers a good balance of quality and value. The generous serving size and the number of servings per container contribute to its overall value for money.
Additionally, it only has 4g of carbs per serving, which is great if you’re following a low-carb diet. Overall, it provides a reasonable value for its price point, offering a combination of quality ingredients, satisfying taste, and a serving size that justifies its cost.
Nutritional value (6/10)
I scored Black Magic a 6.5 out of 10 in nutritional value. I gave Fruit Whirls a 6 and Horchata a 7 because it has fewer artificial ingredients.
Black Magic offers a blend of whey concentrate, micellar casein, egg albumin, MCTs, and whey isolate, providing a total of 24 grams of protein per serving. This multi-source protein blend is designed to support muscle growth and recovery.
The whey protein helps stimulate muscle protein synthesis quickly after exercise, while the micellar casein provides a slower, sustained release of nutrients, which is great for muscle maintenance over time. The egg albumin protein is known for its high bioavailability and essential amino acid content, helping with digestion and absorption.
Mixability (8.5/10)
I scored Black Magic an 8.5 out of 10 for mixability. It’s one of the standout features in my opinion, and makes preparing your post-workout shake a breeze.
I typically use a shaker bottle with a mixer ball, and the powder blended really well with minimal residue with less than 30 seconds of shaking. The consistency was smooth and easy to drink. I’m happy to report there were no surprise clumps in my shake. And I didn’t get any of the grittiness or chalkiness taste you sometimes get with protein powders.
Black Magic’s multi-source protein is formulated to mix easily, and it definitely lives up to that promise. Whether you’re using a shaker bottle, blender, or even just stirring it with a spoon, you’ll be just fine.
Third party testing (0/10)
The way we assess third party testing is binary — either the company tests or they don’t. So I had to give Black Magic a zero in this category. (To read more about our testing process, see here.)
As a fitness coach, I always prioritize supplements that are independently tested and certified by reputable organizations like NSF or Informed Choice. Unfortunately, Black Magic’s protein powder does not have these certifications. While the company claims to conduct internal testing, I can only give credit for unbiased, third-party testing done by well-recognized organizations.
Now, this doesn’t mean the product is unsafe or low-quality, but it does make it harder for me to vouch for its purity and potency. Third-party testing provides an extra layer of assurance that what’s on the label is actually in the product.
I appreciate that Black Magic conducts internal testing, but I would love to see them take that extra step and get their protein powder certified by a trusted third-party organization. This would give us consumers more peace of mind and confidence in their product.
Brand reputation (7/10)
I scored Black Magic’s brand reputation a 7 out of 10. As a relatively new player in the supplement industry, Black Magic certainly doesn’t have the operating history as some of its competitors.
However, Black Magic seems to be making a name for itself with its unique flavor offerings and commitment to product purity. Their social channels are booming, their contact information is readily available on their website, and their customer support has been responsive to my team’s inquiries.
They haven’t been involved in any major controversies that I’m aware of, which is positive and not something I can say for all protein brands. They seem to be focused on producing high-quality supplements and engaging with their customer base.
Of course, this score is based on my current observations and the information available to me. As with any brand, it’s important to stay informed and keep an eye out for any updates or changes that might impact their reputation in the future.
They’re off to a promising start, but there’s still room for growth and improvement. As they continue to establish themselves in the industry and hopefully pursue third-party certifications, I can see their reputation strengthening over time.
What Other People Are Saying
Here’s what other consumers have to say about Black Magic elsewhere online:
Positives:
Customers like the taste, especially the French Vanilla flavor, though some find it a bit too sweet.
Many of them praise its easy-to-mix formula
The macronutrient profile is often highlighted, particularly the low carb content, and the versatility of the vanilla flavor for various recipes.
The overall value of Black Magic’s multi-source protein is a plus, considering the 25 servings per container.
One customer reported receiving the wrong flavor but commended Black Magic’s prompt response and full refund.
Negatives:
Some found it difficult to drink due to the gritty texture or off-putting flavor, despite the good macronutrient profile.
A few reviewers complained about its product packaging, such as containers being only half full upon arrival, and some expressed concerns about the lack of information regarding Black Magic’s processing and testing of their protein powder.
Black Magic vs The Market: How Does it Compare?
Here’s how Black Magic compares to similar protein powders on the market.
You’re looking to build muscle or recover after intense workouts
You prioritize taste and mixability in your protein powder
You’re seeking a convenient post-workout shake or tasty snack between meals
You want a reasonably priced protein powder that balances quality and affordability
Black Magic is Not a Good Choice if:
You prefer a more natural formula without artificial ingredients
Your primary goal is weight loss, and you prefer a higher protein-to-calorie ratio
You only trust supplements that have been third-party tested for purity and potency
If you’re looking to support your muscle growth, enjoy a great-tasting and easily-mixed shake, and don’t mind artificial ingredients, Black Magic is a solid choice. But, if your main focus is weight loss, you have strict dietary preferences, or you require third-party testing, you might want to look elsewhere.
