No Gym Required: Workouts to Do at Home & Actually Enjoy
Staying motivated is easier when you have a routine. I have a lot of tips and tricks to keep my workouts fresh and new. In some ways, I enjoy at-home workouts even more than the gym. My home is much closer than the gym, and it provides a superior sense of privacy and intimacy.
If you want to learn how to turn your workouts into fun and motivational experiences, follow me below while I cover the beats.
A Workout Works Best When You Schedule it
You’ll find it easier to stay motivated when you have a regular routine. The more you exercise at the same time and in the same place, the easier it will be to keep it up. Ideally, if you exercise every day at the same time you will build it into a powerful habit.
I schedule my workouts because if I didn’t, there would be no way I’d make the time. I have a very busy life, and I’d be lost without effective organization. Even if you aren’t that busy, a good schedule can spell the difference between failure and success. Once you get used to using a calendar, it will elevate your motivation and keep you on track.
There are several tricks I use to create a successful schedule. Variety is the spice of life, and using my Powerblock adjustable kettlebell is a special treat I use on a regular basis. I use a lot of different tools and techniques, and organizing it on my calendar ensures I keep my whole body in balance.
It is also important to vary the intensity of your workouts. I love to work hard, but part of working hard is knowing when to rest and heal. If you go full speed all day every day, you’re going to wear yourself out or end up with an injury. I incorporate restorative yoga into my rotation to give my body a chance to heal but still stay in the game. By fitting in healing routines along with power routines, it helps me maintain my good habits and create a powerful work ethic.
Partner Workouts
When your schedule involves other people, it’s easier to stay honest. You have a commitment to show up and be ready to work. I find that using a daily challenge creates a powerful incentive to stay focused and motivated.
I have a crazy competitive nature. When someone challenges me, I get super focused and motivated; even if I don’t win, I still have a lot of fun. When I compete with my friends, everybody wins and has a good time.
Workouts with an intimate partner can strengthen the relationship and create deeper, stronger bonds. When you do partner workouts right, a workout doesn’t just help your physical body, it can create a powerful spiritual bond. These connections don’t just bring us closer together, they make it easier for us to stay motivated. They give us the energy and hope we need so we can work hard and overcome the challenges of life.
If you are sheltering by yourself during the pandemic, virtual training platforms can be an excellent replacement for a partner. Even if you’re not by yourself, virtual platforms are a useful tool to help you find new exercise routines to keep things fresh and exciting.
Whether you are working out by yourself, with a partner, or in a group, music can elevate the experience. I like to come up with music playlists both me and my workout partners enjoy. When I am jamming to the beat and keeping in sync with my exercise buddy, time seems to stop and everything gets easier. There is nothing but us and the music. Some of my best experiences involve music, and the right song can bring the best memories back to the surface. These moments with close friends and loved ones change exercise from a chore to a meaningful experience.
Workouts to Do at Home
The pandemic has created an unprecedented lockdown, and this has opened up new avenues for success. We spend more time in our homes than ever, so we should learn to associate our private spaces with hard work, excitement, and success. Workouts you can do at home can be central to this plan.
It’s best to start small. Making big changes is easier when you break them down into manageable chunks. My burpees workout is simple to learn and relatively easy but can be dialed up enough to challenge the most seasoned professional.
If you build a habit off of small and simple workouts, that habit can expand and branch out. One easy addition is at-home arm workouts. You can also change things up by doing squat workouts instead of burpees. Using different exercises on the same muscle group keeps things interesting and often leads to superior results.
Heart health is very important to me, but you can’t go jogging in your living room or bedroom. Doing your cardio workout at home doesn’t have to be a challenge, though. There are lots of ways to get your blood pumping and hit your target heart rate. You just have to think outside the box a little.
Once you’re set in a good routine, I’d suggest doing a full body workout at home, too. It’s a great way to even out the other exercises in your routine and make sure you’re keeping everything balanced. You can do bodyweight exercises, or you can try a portable gym like the BodyBoss.
There are a vast number of workouts you can do at home, and I hope I’ve given you some good inspiration and shown you a few easy places to start. Once you develop a confident set of at-home workouts, you can vary your routine and even create your own.
We need to win. Not just against the pandemic, but against every crisis and problem we will face in life. The best way to do that is to be prepared in body and mind. Consistent exercise and strong interpersonal bonds are the solid foundation of success in my life, and I think it can work for you, too.
If you aren’t already scheduling your workouts, give it a try. I guarantee the experiment will give you positive results and help you improve your game.
